Providence HistoryCaregivingDuring her extensive experience in the elder caregiving world, founder and owner Galina Knop observed a crucial link between the environment where elders with memory impairment live, the quality of care they receive, and each elder’s overall wellbeing and happiness. She saw how caregivers trained to communicate with the memory impaired
provided motivation and assistance at the elder’s pace. They
defused potentially confusing and stressful situations. They responded
to Mom’s needs as her world changed from minute to minute. Galina
understood that elders thrive amidst a variety of social interactions. Designing ProvidenceGalina designed and built Providence Place to carry out her dream. Within a physical layout that meets the special needs (link) of people with memory impairment, Providence Place recreates the cozy, intimate atmosphere its 31 residents enjoyed in their own homes. Building on her experience in residential care, Galina developed a unique program to offer the same high quality of personalized care to elders who did not reside at Providence Place, but instead wanted to stay within the comfort of their own home or in another setting. The Providence family now includes an exceptionally trained team of in-home care attendants (link) that provide loving care to clients outside of our community. Caregiver TrainingSince the State of California has no caregiver training or licensing requirements for businesses that provide in-home attendant care, the quality and reliability of service varies drastically depending on the client’s choice of provider. We set out to ensure the most reliable care for our clients by training all our in-home attendant caregivers on site at Providence Place to licensing standards (link) set by the State Department of Social Services for dementia care-certified, residential care facilities for elders (RCFEs) like Providence. Galina believes that caregivers trained to work with memory impaired elders have the unique ability to communicate with seniors and anticipate their needs. While many of our stay-at-home clients do not experience memory loss, the process of aging can be emotionally difficult and we ensure our caregivers are able to handle any situation. Clients who receive in-home attendant care may spend four to 12 hours per day at Providence Place. As they buy time to explore care options, this transitional care (link) gives both clients and families first-hand experience of residential care for the memory impaired. Choosing from among Providence’s full range of care offerings, elders and their families can tailor a flexible care scenario to their individual needs. Breaking new ground in elder-careProvidence continues to break new ground in elder-care. Through our extensive network in the elder-care community and through our own efforts, we continually monitor new research findings on care of elders with memory impairment. Our goal is to continuously improve clients’ quality of life and purpose and, in so doing, to provide peace of mind to their families.
