California Alzheimers Disease Report

Funded by the Rosaldine and Arthur Gilbert Foundation and the State Department of Pubic Health, the report finds that there are 1.1 million Californians providing unpaid caring for people with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia, about 11% of our nation’s caregivers. Most care is delivered at home by family caregivers, most of whom are wives or adult daughters of the elder with dementia. Compared with other family caregivers, those who care for seniors with memory problems are more likely to: experience emotional stress and suffer from sleep disturbance.

‘Smart houses’ may keep seniors at home longer

What to Know If You Are The Boss of a Caregiver

A WSJ article examines what you need to know if you employ a caregiver to avoid tax and legal snags. Consumers can avoid tax snags if they pay an agency directly, and if the agency is the caregiver’s official employer. Many home care agencies assume all responsibility for payroll and all related taxes.

Treating Dementia, but Overlooking Its Physical Toll

Dementia is often viewed as a disease of the mind, an illness that erases treasured memories but leaves the body intact. But dementia is a physical illness, too — a progressive, terminal disease that shuts down the body as it attacks the brain.
